As part of our rural development mission, our organization aims to reduce poverty in rural and remote areas. This constitutes the centerpiece of HiilSan’s activities. Thus, in this fight against poverty, education is at the heart of this fight as in any development.
This is how at HiilSan we have focused on raising the level of education in the agro-pastoral village of Buss, in Somaliland, by first rehabilitating the village school in 2024 for the first time since it was built about twenty years ago. But the good news is that two new classrooms have been built within the school, a project funded in part by the generosity of the Amoud Foundation, an American organization (Texas) that also furnished the two classrooms. This has helped relieve overcrowded classrooms while welcoming new students, especially girls previously assigned to herding livestock or doing household chores.
With the expansion of the school, parents are no longer inclined to keep their children out of school. This notable change among parents has come about thanks to HiilSan’s efforts and awareness campaigns among the population to convince them of the importance of education in the fight against poverty and public health.
Moreover, at the last Annual Meeting, the health issue was raised as part of a project that consists of expanding the village’s modest medical centre and recruiting a qualified nurse to meet the pressing needs in this sector. This project is among our organization’s priorities for 2025.
